In return for his service in the Revolutionary War, John Haff received Lot 15—“a fine grant of land” of 1000 acres —
from Zephaniah Platt (founder of Plattsburgh, 1785). The transaction was recorded on February 28, 1787.
The Haff family moved from Dutchess County to Clinton County in 1791. John was 43 at the time.
According to the 1790 NY State census, the family was comprised of 6 free whites and one slave.
The most brutal local story on record about recapturing a run-away slave is about John Haff.
