The North Country Underground Railroad Historical Association is raising funds to save a slice of history.
Our goal is to purchase the former property of Quaker Abolitionist and Underground Railroad Conductor Stephen Keese Smith. See flyer for more information.

People & Places: One Story at a Time

Introduction

People and Places includes stories from seven Northeastern New York counties, Vermont and Canada. It is an introduction, not a comprehensive history. Most of the images of UGRR sites are from "One Story at a Time," a 2005 Essex County Historical Museum exhibit of photographs by Laura Sells Doyle. Additional images are from Special Collections, Benjamin F. Feinberg Library, SUNY Plattsburgh, and other sources. The text was written by Don Papson who found several of the stories in Tom Calarco's The Underground Railroad in the Adirondack Region (MacFarland Company, Inc. 2004). Don found additional stories though his own research.

We focus on the region north of Albany: the Champlain Line.
